Google built the royalty-free WebM video format with the sophisticated acquisition compression technology On2 2009 determined it in its acquisition. In addition to the above objective of open video for the Web, the search giant uses also On2 technology create a new image format called WebP with the aim to reduce the load time of the page by increasing the efficiency of the image compression.
Used some of the still image compression techniques that supports acquisition on individual video frames compress WebP itself. The format is intended for use with lossy images as an alternative to the venerable JPEG. Google led a large study show that WebP offers an average file size savings of 39 percent. Despite the seemingly impressive results, not everyone through the Google results is convinced. Mozilla, which officially refused to support the format in Firefox has emerged as one of the most prominent opponents of WebP.

Spurns Oracle LibreOffice, Apache Foundation will give OOo

Oracle announced a proposal of this week the OpenOffice.org (OOo) project to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) transfer. In a current mailing-list thread, the Ubuntu technical Board is discussed, whether the new unit environment appropriate default value for the upcoming release of Ubuntu 11.04, codenamed natty is the narwhal. The prevailing view seems that the unit is still on the way, but there are a number of technical issues that still be considered.

Google released an update for the mobile Web version of Google maps on Friday, many features that previously included add native app in the - now, the Android app anyway. The additional capabilities bring Web maps up to par with the native app Android users have since some time had, even though the Web app on Android compared to the native app is less smooth. Peppermint two: Faster, slicker and easier than ever

Is it a little more than a year, because, I reviewed the first Peppermint OS, and while I liked the first attempt on this new project, I have been looking forward to Peppermint two really have. Well, was my wait over last week, so I was able to kick the tires and get a good feel for it after you install and use it for a few days.

The time has come for Google i/O, the search giant annual event. Google uses I/o as a forum for some of his most important users targeted innovations and central components of its technology roadmap revelation. Hands on: Miro 4.0 offers music management, Android sync

Hands-on: Haiku Alpha 3 on a netbook running

The haiku open-source software project, building a clean-room implementation of the BeOS platform, has released its third alpha version. The new version over the weekend was made available, and offers advanced hardware support, better stability and a host of new features. Haiku Alpha 3 have I in VirtualBox and tested on my HP mini NetBook.
BeOS was one of the most advanced desktop computer platforms of the 90s, but it not mainstream acceptance. Google Announces film rent for Android music streaming in beta,

Laboratories Android devices come to music and film rental service directly from Google, the company at its I/O Conference announced today. Customers will be able to stream movies from Android market and streaming gets their own uploaded music from a Google service "music beta." Users can also "Lock both types of media for their devices for offline consumption".
Music-beta, currently available invitation only for Android powered devices with at least version 2.2, enables uploading users that up to 20,000 songs on music.google.com. Customers can then the on Android devices stream music or "pin" it to the device for local storage. Devices will be in the position, automatically cached also recently played audio content for offline use. The music service shall be released "at least while it is in beta," so here's development hoping on a Google mail-style flight path.
The film service, which is now live as a tab in the Android market, allows users access to movie rentals at a price of $1.99 per film. Rented movie are then Vorbis or pinnable on Android devices, although Google does not say how long tenants are preserved access to the video.
Google has also not mentioned whether DRM used for the film rent, but in view of the fact that Android 3.0 a new DRM framework added the videos are probably not in the free and clear. The service seems to be unrelated to YouTube streaming video service where only 3,000 Hollywood titles have been added.
